Non-metallic banding is used where standard stainless steel or mild steel banding is unsuitable: corrosive environments, applications where metal contamination is unacceptable, and where electrical conductivity is a problem. HCL Fasteners produces two non-metallic banding products — Smart Band and Smart Tie — each suited to different applications within this category.
This guide covers construction, where each product is used, selection, installation and the compliance considerations relevant to Australian applications.
What is Non-Metallic Banding?
Non-metallic banding is a fastening and bundling system made from polymer materials rather than metal. In its most common form, it consists of a continuous strip of polymer material — typically nylon or polypropylene — that is looped around a pipe, conduit, cable bundle or object and secured.
The reasons for choosing non-metallic over metal banding fall into three categories:
- Corrosion immunity: polymer banding does not rust, oxidise or corrode. In environments that would rapidly degrade metal — wastewater, chemical exposure, coastal installations — polymer banding outlasts metal indefinitely.
- Non-conductivity: polymer banding is electrically non-conductive, making it appropriate for electrical applications where metal banding would create a conductivity or earthing problem.
- Non-contamination: in food processing, pharmaceutical and medical environments, metal banding creates a contamination risk from corrosion products or from metal contact with process fluids. Non-metallic banding eliminates this risk.
HCL Smart Band
Construction
Smart Band is a glass-fibre-reinforced polymer banding product. The reinforcement distinguishes it from standard cable ties or nylon strapping: the glass fibre content gives Smart Band tensile strength and temperature resistance substantially higher than unreinforced nylon.
The band section is a flat strip with a textured outer surface and a smooth inner surface. The closure buckle is made from the same polymer material as the band and is fastened using a banding tool.
Properties
- Temperature range: Smart Band retains its mechanical properties across a wider temperature range than standard nylon cable ties. The glass fibre reinforcement reduces thermal creep, which is the tendency of polymer materials to elongate slowly under sustained load at elevated temperatures.
- UV resistance: the formulation includes UV stabilisers, making it suitable for outdoor and exposed installations.
- Chemical resistance: resistant to most industrial chemicals, acids and alkalis. Not suitable for strong oxidising agents or certain organic solvents — check the chemical compatibility data for specific exposure scenarios.
- Tensile strength: significantly higher than standard cable ties in equivalent widths. This makes Smart Band suitable for bundling heavy cable runs, securing large-diameter pipe insulation, and structural banding applications where a standard cable tie would be inadequate.
Applications
- Cable management in electrical and telecommunications installations
- Pipe and conduit banding in corrosive environments (wastewater, chemical plants, coastal installations)
- Insulation securing on hot pipes and equipment in process plants
- Cable tray bundling in mining and industrial environments
- Outdoor utility and infrastructure installations
HCL Smart Tie
Construction
The coating is a nylon or similar engineering polymer applied to the full band surface.
Properties
- High tensile strength: Smart Tie handles substantially higher loads than any unreinforced polymer cable tie
- Temperature resistance: the glass fibre core retains structural integrity at temperatures that would soften or fail a standard nylon tie
- Non-conductive outer surface: the polymer coating prevents electrical conductivity
- Corrosion resistant outer: the polymer coating protects from surface corrosion in aggressive environments
Applications
- High-load cable bundling where polymer-only ties are not strong enough
- Electrical cable management where metallic ties are prohibited
- Marine and offshore applications — combined corrosion resistance and high strength
- Food processing — suitable for safety-critical applications where metal detection is in use
- Hazardous area (ATEX/IECEx) installations where static-free and non-sparking fastening is required
Selecting Between Smart Band and Smart Tie
The decision comes down to load and environment:
- Use Smart Band where: high tensile strength is not the primary requirement, the installation is predominantly about corrosion resistance and non-conductivity, and cost efficiency across a large volume of ties matters. Also the correct choice where a fully polymer product is required for metal-free environments.
- Use Smart Tie where: the application requires higher tensile strength than a polymer-only tie can deliver, or where the combination of corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength is the specification requirement. Correct for marine, offshore, heavy cable runs, and high-temperature industrial applications.
Sizing
Both products are available in multiple widths and lengths. Selection is based on:
- Bundle or object diameter: the tie or band must have sufficient length to loop around the object and complete the closure with enough tail for tensioning
- Load requirement: wider bands carry higher tensile loads. For bundling applications, the load requirement is typically low; for structural banding, confirm the tensile rating against the application load
- Installation tool clearance: some installation environments have limited access for tensioning tools — confirm the tool requirement for the specific product variant
Installation
Smart Band and Smart Tie installation follows the same basic process as metallic banding:
- Loop the band around the object
- Feed the tail through the head or clip mechanism
- Tension to the specified force using the appropriate tool
- Secure the closure (the head locks automatically for Smart Tie; the buckle is fastened with a banding tool for Smart Band)
- Trim the tail flush
Do not overtension. Overtensioning nylon or polymer ties cuts into cable jacket material and can damage the cables being secured. Use a calibrated tensioning tool where load accuracy matters.
Compliance Considerations
For Australian electrical installations governed by AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules), cable ties and banding used for cable management must be suitable for the environment and application. Non-metallic banding in electrical applications should meet the relevant UV resistance and temperature classifications for the installation class.
For food processing applications, confirm that the specific product formulation meets the applicable food contact standard for the jurisdiction. HCL can provide compliance documentation on request for food and pharmaceutical applications.
