Herbie clips are nylon spring clips that grip hose and tubing by snapping into place, without a screw mechanism. Worm drive clamps (also called Jubilee clips) use a threaded steel band tightened with a screwdriver or nut driver. Both secure hose-to-fitting connections — but they suit different pressure ranges, materials, and installation conditions. The short answer: Herbie clips are better for low-pressure, corrosion-sensitive or non-metallic applications; worm drive clamps are better for anything requiring adjustability, higher pressure or stronger clamping force.

What Is a Herbie Clip?

Herbie clips are non-metallic hose clips manufactured by HCL Fasteners in the UK. They are made from Nylon 6.6 (PA66) or high-performance polymer variants, and work by forming a complete circle around the hose — unlike a worm drive clamp, which leaves a gap at the screw housing. The clip is pre-tensioned from the factory: it grips by spring force rather than tightening torque.

The clip-lock design means installation requires no tools for smaller sizes — just squeeze the clip over the hose onto the fitting and it locks in place. Purpose-built installation tools are available for production-line use and for larger sizes where hand force isn't sufficient.

What Is a Worm Drive Clamp?

A worm drive clamp uses a perforated steel band threaded through a housing containing a worm gear. Turning the screw tightens the band around the hose. The design is fully adjustable across a clamping range (for example, 20–40mm or 40–60mm), and can be loosened and re-tightened indefinitely.

Worm drive clamps are available in five material grades (W1 through W5) to suit different corrosion environments — from zinc-plated mild steel for dry indoor use through to 316 marine stainless for saltwater immersion. They're the dominant standard in automotive, plumbing, agricultural and industrial applications globally.

Where Herbie Clips Win

Low-pressure, corrosion-sensitive applications

In environments where metal corrosion is a serious problem — chemical handling, food processing, outdoor irrigation, marine bilge fittings, subsea cable management — Herbie clips are the right choice. There's no steel to corrode, no zinc coating to degrade, no screw to seize. The clip maintains its clamping force indefinitely in environments that would destroy a W2 clamp in months.

Automotive cooling and heating circuits

Modern vehicles use Herbie clips as OEM fitments on low-pressure cooling hoses, heater circuits, and coolant overflow connections. They're designed to match the hose diameter precisely, apply even radial force without a gap, and won't crack plastic barbed fittings the way an overtightened worm drive can. For OEM replacements on these circuits, match the original fitment.

Production line and high-volume assembly

On an assembly line where the same hose-to-fitting connection is made hundreds of times a day, Herbie clips deliver consistent results without operator torque variation. A worm drive clamp relies on the operator applying the right torque — too loose means a leak, too tight damages the hose. The Herbie clip's spring-loaded design removes that variable entirely.

Non-metallic and MRI environments

Medical equipment, laboratory instruments and MRI-adjacent installations require non-magnetic, non-conductive fasteners. Herbie clips tick both boxes. A stainless steel worm drive clamp — even W5 grade — is conductive and mildly magnetic.

Where Worm Drive Clamps Win

Pressurised hose connections

If the hose carries pressure — automotive coolant under thermostat pressure, irrigation under pump pressure, any industrial fluid circuit — a worm drive clamp is the right call. Herbie clips are not rated for pressurised systems. Fitting one on a pressurised cooling hose is a failure waiting to happen.

Unknown or variable hose diameter

Herbie clips are size-specific — a clip for a 19mm hose won't work on a 21mm hose. Worm drive clamps cover a range, making them far more practical for workshop and maintenance situations where the exact hose OD may vary or isn't known in advance. A box of assorted W2 clamps will handle most automotive and plumbing jobs a workshop encounters.

High-temperature applications

Standard PA66 Herbie clips are rated to approximately 120–130°C. Worm drive clamps made from stainless steel maintain their properties well beyond that. For exhaust connections, engine bay heat zones or high-temperature industrial fluid lines, a steel worm drive clamp in the correct grade is the safer choice.

Marine and coastal pressurised connections

For marine use where hoses are under pressure — engine cooling, fuel lines, exhaust — W4 or W5 worm drive clamps are the standard. The clamping force a worm drive provides is necessary to maintain a seal under vibration and pressure that a Herbie clip isn't designed to handle.
