Bareco Tractor Seats: Suspension Seats, Pan Seats and How to Choose the Right One

A worn tractor seat is one of those problems that is easy to ignore until it isn't. What starts as minor discomfort becomes genuine fatigue by mid-afternoon, and chronic back problems are a well-documented consequence of long hours on a seat with no suspension. Replacing a tractor seat is one of the highest-value modifications you can make to a working tractor — particularly if you're spending four or more hours in it each day.
Bareco has been supplying tractor seats to Australian farmers since 1944. The 9975 Series covers eight seat types from heavy-duty suspension seats for full-size tractors through to steel pan seats for vintage machinery. This guide covers the full range, explains the differences between types, and helps you choose the right replacement for your machine.

Suspension Seats vs Pan Seats: The Key Difference
Suspension seats use a mechanical system — shock absorber, coil springs or both — to isolate the operator from ground vibration and impact. The seat base moves independently of the tractor frame, absorbing a significant portion of the energy that would otherwise transfer directly to the operator. For full-time agricultural operators, a quality suspension seat is not a luxury — it is a fatigue and long-term injury management tool.
Pan seats are fixed steel shells. No movement, no absorption — what the tractor feels, you feel. They are lighter, simpler and less expensive than suspension seats, and for occasional use or short work sessions they are perfectly adequate. For restoration work on vintage tractors, they are often the only period-correct option.
The decision comes down to hours in the seat and ground conditions. For a quick mow or an occasional-use tractor, a pan seat replacement is fine. For operators spending four or more hours a day on rough ground, a suspension seat is the right call.

Standard Suspension Seats — B-8642, B-8643, B-8644
The standard suspension range uses the same universal mounting plate as the heavy duty seats at a lower price point. The 26mm shock absorber and 3.2mm frame handle moderate ground conditions well — suitable for general farm use where continuous rough-ground operation is not the primary concern.
Specifications:
- Standard duty 26mm shock absorber
- 3.2mm heavy duty frame
- Universal sliding mounting plate adapts to most tractor seat bases
- Suits Massey Ferguson, Ford, John Deere and many other popular tractor brands
Available in black (B-8642), blue (B-8643) and yellow (B-8644). For occasional to moderate use, the standard range is a practical and cost-effective replacement. For full working days on rough ground, the B-9642 heavy duty range is the better choice.

Suspension Seat for Small Japanese Tractors — B-9645
Small Japanese tractors — Kubota, Yanmar, Iseki, Mitsubishi and similar — are widely used on Australian farms and acreages, but their compact operator stations don't always accommodate a full-size suspension seat. The B-9645 is sized specifically for these machines, with a compact footprint designed to fit most small Japanese tractor seat stations as a direct or near-direct replacement.
The mechanical suspension system requires no air supply or hydraulics — long service life with minimal maintenance. If you are running a fixed pan seat on a small Japanese tractor and find that longer sessions cause back fatigue, the B-9645 is one of the most effective upgrades you can make. Verify the mounting pattern against your existing seat base before ordering.

Full Size Pan Seat — B-9640
The B-9640 is the standard full-size pan seat and the most commonly stocked item in the Bareco seat range. Heavy-gauge pressed steel with baked enamel finish and universal mounting holes that fit the majority of modern tractors, ride-on mowers and industrial equipment without modification. If you need a pan seat replacement and are unsure which model to order, the B-9640 is the right starting point.
For a high-back version with lumbar support, see the B-9654 Michigan type. For sub-compact tractors, see the B-9641. For pre-1960s vintage tractors, see the B-1866.

High Back Michigan Pan Seat — B-9654
The B-9654 shares the same construction and mounting pattern as the B-9640 but adds a curved high back panel that provides lumbar support. The Michigan-type design has been common on agricultural and industrial equipment for decades and is a practical option where a full suspension seat is not required but a flat pan is not comfortable enough for longer sessions. Heavy-gauge pressed steel, baked enamel finish, universal mounting pattern.

Small Tractor Pan Seat — B-9641
The B-9641 is sized for sub-compact tractors, small ride-on mowers and compact machinery where the full-size B-9640 footprint is too large. Heavy-gauge pressed steel with baked enamel finish and universal mounting pattern. If your existing seat base is small and the B-9640 does not fit, the B-9641 is usually the correct replacement. Verify the mounting hole pattern against your existing bracket before ordering.

Vintage Steel Pan Seat — B-1866
The B-1866 suits very early tractors — pre-1960s machinery where the seat base is smaller than the modern universal pattern. Restorers of vintage Massey-Harris, Ferguson, McCormick, early John Deere and similar machines will recognise this profile as the closest available match to the original equipment. Heavy-gauge pressed steel with baked enamel finish. The smaller footprint and mounting hole spacing are what distinguish it from the modern B-9640. This is a restoration-grade replacement, not a comfort upgrade.

Forklift Seat — B-9151
The B-9151 is built for industrial forklifts and telehandlers — a harder operating environment than agricultural tractor work, with more frequent mounting and dismounting, higher vibration from hard surfaces, and longer continuous shifts. Suspension mechanism for vibration absorption, cushioned cover for continuous use, heavy-duty construction and forklift-pattern mounting. Verify the mounting pattern against your existing seat base before ordering.

How to Choose the Right Bareco Tractor Seat
Suspension or pan? If you are in the seat four or more hours a day on rough ground, choose a suspension seat. For occasional use or short sessions, a pan seat replacement is adequate.
Standard or heavy duty suspension? For general farm use, the B-8642 standard range is a practical choice. For full working days in demanding conditions, the B-9642 heavy duty range is worth the step up — the 35mm vs 26mm shock absorber is the key difference.
Small Japanese tractor? The B-9645 is sized for Kubota, Yanmar, Iseki, Mitsubishi and similar compact machines. A full-size suspension seat will not fit most of these operator stations.
Which pan seat? Start with the B-9640 for modern machines. B-9641 for sub-compact. B-9654 for high-back lumbar support. B-1866 for pre-1960s vintage tractors with a smaller original seat base.
Forklift? B-9151 only — the duty cycle and mounting pattern are different from agricultural tractor seats.
Fitting Notes
Most Bareco pan seats use a universal mounting pattern that fits common tractor and ride-on mower seat bases without drilling. The suspension seat ranges include a sliding mounting plate that adapts across most common tractor brackets. Before ordering, verify the mounting hole spacing on your existing seat base. If you are unsure, call 1300 027 886 with your tractor make, model and year.
